Mang Tomas. Datu Puti. Silver Swan. Jufran. Filipino families around the world are sure to have these brands in stock, the go to for cooking Filipino dishes. But at the heart of these sweet and savory condiments--all products of NutriAsia Inc.--is a bitter reality: the workers producing these goods are forced to be temporary (“contractual”) labor, and thus underpaid and without benefits; exposed to hazardous conditions; and suppressed by NutriAsia management.
Things came to a head this June when NutriAsia workers went on strike to demand an end to the injustices they face at the workplace. They were met with brutal repression by over 300 police officers ordered to violently disperse the strike by NutriAsia management. The police attack left dozens of workers injured and over 20 arrested. However, despite the bloodshed, the workers have committed to continue fighting until their demands are met.
International solidarity for the NutriAsia workers is critical at this moment. That’s why the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA), Anakbayan-USA, and the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines - US (ICHRP-US) have partnered together to gather support for the NutriAsia workers in their fight for justice and the right to unionize. Your support will allow them to continue their picket and send a strong message to NutriAsia management that their practices will not go unchecked.
Here’s what you can do:
1) DONATE: Support the NutriAsia workers by allowing them to continue their picket until their demands for regular employment, safe working conditions, living wages, and the right to unionize have been met. Proceeds will go directly to Kilusang Mayo Uno, the labor center spearheading the effort to unionize NutriAsia workers.
2) BOYCOTT: Say no to NutriAsia products! These include Mang Tomas, Datu Puti, Silver Swan, Jufran, Golden Fiesta, UFC, PAPA Banana Catsup, and Locally. Find alternatives, or recipes to make your own.
3) SPREAD AWARENESS: Vocalize your support by writing or recording statements of solidarity as an individual or an organization. Please send copies of the statements to firstname.lastname@example.org.
4) INTEGRATE: Contact email@example.com if you are interested in future opportunities to integrate with NutriAsia workers, or other workers in the Philippines who are fighting similar fights for justice.
